Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Your body has a natural fight-or-flight response system that helps keep you safe. But when you constantly live in fight-or-flight mode, you may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety causes persistent feelings of worry and fear, even when there are no apparent dangers. You may avoid places, people, or things to prevent these feelings from taking over.

In addition to general feelings of worry, known as generalized anxiety disorder, you can develop specific fears that trigger worries and anxious thoughts. As a result, you may receive a specialized diagnosis of conditions like:

  • Phobias
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Separation anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

It’s important to seek a diagnosis and treatment when your anxiety symptoms interfere with your daily routines. With proper treatment, you can calm your anxious feelings and restore good mental health.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

In addition to persistent worry or fear, anxiety can cause a variety of symptoms that affect your physical, mental, and behavioral health. These symptoms may include:

  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Digestive problems
  • Difficulties concentrating

For some with intense feelings of anxiety or fear, you may be prone to panic attacks that make you feel a sense of danger or doom.

Anxiety often goes hand-in-hand with depression as many people with anxiety also struggle with episodes of both.

What causes anxiety?

There are a number of factors that can cause anxiety, including traumatic events. You may also develop anxiety as a side effect of an underlying medical condition, such as:

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Thyroid disorder
  • Other mental health issues

For people that stop use or abuse of drugs or alcohol, anxiety may be a part of the withdrawal process.

What treatments are available for anxiety?

Dr. Weinstein determines if your symptoms relate to anxiety by reviewing your medical history, your family history, and the severity of your symptoms.

For many, consistent use of antidepressant medications can alleviate chronic worry and depressive symptoms that relate to anxiety. There are also fast-acting medications available that can address severe anxiety symptoms, including panic.

Medication therapy alone may not be enough to provide long-term relief of anxiety issues. Dr. Weinstein may recommend talk therapy sessions to better identify your anxiety triggers and help you cope with your anxious thoughts and fears.

Dr. Weinstein may also recommend alternative therapies, such as meditation and yoga, to relax your body and mind.

Don’t let anxiety interfere with a successful life. You can book a consultation for anxiety treatment online or by calling Summit Psychiatric Services today.
